Dividing Pain & Multiplying Joy

By

We had our introduction to a new Bible study last night at New Hope. What joy it is to gather with these women! A discussion in my small group reminded me of the saying, “Pain shared is pain divided. Joy shared is joy multiplied.”

Life was never meant to be lived alone. God, in His wisdom, created us for community… to walk with one another through both the valleys and the mountaintops. Romans 12:15 says, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”
Paul is giving us a beautiful picture of empathy and togetherness. We are called to enter into each other’s experiences, both the joy and the pain.

Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
– Romans 12:15

When we share our pain with others (trusted friends, family, or our church community), it doesn’t magically go away, but something powerful happens, the burden feels lighter. A listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, or even a simple word of encouragement can divide the weight of sorrow. We’re reminded that we’re not alone, and that brings hope.

On the other hand, when we share our joy, it multiplies. Think of the last time you received good news and got to tell someone who truly celebrated with you. Their happiness added to yours, and the joy grew. This is how God designed community… to amplify the blessings and ease the burdens.

So whether you’re in a season of grief or celebration, don’t walk through it alone. Let someone in. Share your heart. God often meets us through others, and in doing so, He brings healing, connection, and deeper joy.
