Joy in the Simple Things

By

Yesterday, my five grandchildren were splashing, laughing, and running through a makeshift waterpark their Papa created in our yard. With just a garden hose, a few sprinklers, and a kiddie pool, our yard was transformed into a world of joy and wonder. They didn’t need a fancy destination or expensive equipment. The simple setup, made with love, was more than enough.

As I watched them play, I was reminded of how often we look for happiness in big, elaborate things- perfect plans, ideal circumstances, or future milestones. But… much like our grandkids found so much fun in what was right in front of them, God invites us to find joy in the simple blessings He provides every day.

Zechariah 4:10 says, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.” Sometimes, “these small beginnings” are not just about what we’re starting, but how we’re choosing to see the ordinary moments as gifts.

That backyard waterpark reminded me that joy isn’t found in perfection. It’s found in presence… in being present with the people we love, in recognizing God’s goodness in the now, and in receiving the simple things with a thankful heart.

Maybe today, joy is closer than you think. Maybe it’s in a conversation, a quiet moment, or a homemade waterpark in your own backyard. May we have eyes to see it.

Yes….being present is tough for me. My personality is always planning ahead. Thank you for the reminder!
