In Exodus 17:8–15, there’s a vivid picture of divine partnership. The Israelites are under attack by Amalek, and Moses, following God’s direction, tells Joshua to choose men and go fight. But the battle isn’t won by strength alone. As long as Moses holds up his staff, Israel prevails. When his hands grow weary, Aaron and Hur come alongside him to support his arms. And because of this combined obedience… Joshua fighting, Moses interceding, and Aaron and Hur supporting, the battle is won.
It’s easy to ask, why didn’t God simply wipe out the Amalekites? God could have spoken a word and ended the conflict. He is all-powerful. Yet God chose to involve His people. He gave Moses a role, Joshua a role, and even Aaron and Hur. Not because He needed them, but because He wanted them.
This is the heart of our calling. God doesn’t need us. He is complete in Himself. Yet He chooses to work through us. What a humbling truth! The God of the universe invites us into His eternal story. He calls us to participate, not as spectators, but as sons and daughters filled with the Spirit, strengthened in Christ, and walking by faith.

Our callings may differ. Some may fight on the front lines like Joshua. Others may stand and intercede like Moses or be quiet supporters like Aaron and Hur. But each role is vital. Each act of obedience, no matter how small, becomes part of God’s victory.
In Christ, we are not left to our own strength. The same Spirit that empowered Moses and Joshua dwells in us. When we grow weary, God provides support through His presence, His Word, and His people.
So when God calls you, whether to lead, to serve, to speak, or simply to hold up someone else’s arms, remember: God doesn’t need you. God wants you. God delights to involve His children. And through faith, empowered by His Spirit, we can say yes.
