Masterpieces in the Making

By

Last night, our family gathered at a little local gallery (Encore in Mt. Morris) to attend a very big event: an art show with a piece created by our grandson, Harry. He’s just five years old with an Aga who can’t draw stick figures, and yet, there it was: his very own piece, hanging proudly on the wall, part of a school exhibition that will run all summer long.

As we stood there, phone cameras out, eyes misty, and hearts about to burst, you’d have thought we were at the Louvre, because when you see through the eyes of love, every scribble or brush stroke becomes a masterpiece.

Seeing our boy proudly grin next to his artwork, I was reminded of how God must feel when He looks at us. We may see our efforts as clumsy or unfinished, but God sees potential, purpose, and  promise. The Creator of the universe delights in the work of His children, even when it’s still in progress.

Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” I wonder if God beams with pride the way we did last night… when we take small steps, try new things, and offer our hearts in even the simplest of ways.

Harry may not have painted the Mona Lisa (although this Aga believes his artwork is very near that caliber), but his joy and sense of wonder lit up the room far more than any gallery light. And honestly, I think that’s exactly the kind of art heaven loves best.
