Casting Our Cares

“Casting all your cares on Him, because He cares about you.” – 1 Peter 5:7

When Peter wrote his first letter, he was speaking directly to believers who were going through serious hardship. These early Christians were experiencing what we might call “mixed persecution”—a combination of slander, social rejection, and governmental oppression. Life was uncertain. Their faith made them targets. Their future, at least on this earth, seemed fragile.

Yet in the face of that suffering, Peter didn’t just tell them to endure. He reminded them of something deeper. They had an “imperishable hope” (1 Peter 1:3–4). A living hope. A secured inheritance. And in that light, he urged them to live differently, to humble themselves, to love one another, and to entrust their worries to God.

I don’t know what you faced yesterday, last week, or what you will face today or this week, but I have assurance that what Peter writes in this letter is true. I needed to be reminded of it this morning. We  are sure to face suffering in this world, but we, too, have this imperishable hope.

That’s where 1 Peter 5:7 comes in: “Casting all your cares on Him, because He cares for you.

This verse is more than just a comforting quote. It’s a lifeline. Peter isn’t saying “pretend you’re not hurting.” He’s saying, “You’re not alone in it.” The God who raised Jesus from the dead, who promises a living hope that never fades, is the same God who cares for you in your day-to-day struggle.

Whether you’re weighed down by financial stress, chronic illness, relationship tension, or simply the heaviness of life, you are invited to throw those burdens on Him. Not politely hand them over, but cast them. He can handle them. He already has.

The believers in Peter’s time needed that reminder. And so do we. Our hope is not in a perfect life, but in a perfect Savior who has secured our future and walks with us in the present.

So today, whatever care you’re carrying, take a moment to truly cast it on the Lord. He sees. He knows. And He cares.

When i lived in Florida, I was a captain for our 12 passenger pontoon. We would cast off from the pier to motor up the Suwannee river. When I think of the Scripture to cast off our cares, I consider how we cast away from the land and fliated down the river. It too, was a freedom. Freedom from our land-based life and cares. Different focus all together. ⚓️ cast off the anchor that holds us tightly to our fears…
