When the Well Runs Dry

By

“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.’” – John 4:13-14

I mentioned yesterday talking about the importance of being wholly healthy… in spirit, soul, and body this week. Today is about our spiritual health.

Have you ever felt like you’re running on empty…mentally foggy, emotionally worn out, physically tired? Often, what we describe as “burnout” isn’t just about being busy or tired. It can also be a sign of spiritual dryness, a season when God feels distant, prayer feels hard, and our souls feel parched.

Spiritual health is not just a “nice to have” part of our faith. It’s essential. Just as our bodies need water, our spirits need the living water that only Jesus provides. When our spiritual lives are neglected, it often shows up in our emotions and even in our bodies. Anxiety creeps in. Patience runs low. Energy fades. But when we’re spiritually nourished, there’s a strength that carries us through the challenges of each day.

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 4:23, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” That means tending to your soul isn’t selfish, it’s vital. A healthy spirit fuels peace, joy, and resilience in ways no self-help routine can match.

Are you running dry? Are you trying to give to others while neglecting time alone with God?

Take 10 minutes this morning to sit quietly with God. No phone, no to-do list, no pressure. Just be with Him. Read a Psalm. Whisper a prayer. Let Him refill your soul with living water.

I closed my eyes to seek the Lord just now. I need to be at my daughters soon so they can go to chemo. I would rather not be there as its chaos. But God showed me to go in, annoint the house with oil and pray over my family!
