Protected by Love

“He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” — Psalm 91:4

For the past two weeks, a robin has made its home on the light above our back door. We noticed the nest early on, and suspecting there were eggs inside, we chose not to disturb it, even though it’s in a rather inconvenient spot. Sure enough, the eggs hatched, and now, every time I step outside, I’m met with a flurry of wings and a very determined mama bird dive-bombing me to protect her young.

At first, I found it a bit annoying. Last night, though,  I started to admire mama bird’s tenacity. She doesn’t care that I’m 100 times her size. She doesn’t hesitate. She simply knows she has something precious to protect, and she’ll do whatever it takes.

Isn’t that a picture of God’s love for us?

We are His. And while we often don’t realize the threats around us or even understand how vulnerable we are, He is vigilant… watching, guarding, shielding. His protection may not always be visible or gentle. Sometimes it’s fierce. Because His love is fierce.

That little robin reminded me that love defends. And if a small bird can be that bold for her babies, how much more will our Heavenly Father fight for us, surround us, and keep us safe under His wings?

Great comparison Dana! I wonder if your Robin will return to your house, to nest again. Whenever situations in my life seem overwhelming, I sing ” You are going to fight my battles”!
