More than 30 years ago, in our “BK years” (before kids), as Jeff loving calls them, one of my favorite memories began with the two of us tossing a mattress in the back of our truck and a vague idea of getting away for the weekend. No reservations. No mapped-out itinerary. Just a shared sense of adventure and the trust that whatever we found along the way would be worth it, as long as we were together. Occasionally, we would get all the way to Hayward, Wisconsin, especially if we had an extra day for adventure.
I remember the sense of adventure, the laughter, and the way the stars looked brighter when we pulled off the road that first night. It wasn’t about where we ended up. It was about how free it felt to follow the moment. Looking back, those weekends became core memories for us, reminders that sometimes the best stories come from not having a plan.
Could it be that sometimes God calls us to live this way, with a sense of holy adventure?
In Hebrews 11:8, it says, “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.”
“Not knowing where he was going…” Just like us those weekends in our younger years. Just like so many moments in life where God invites us to trust Him without handing us a roadmap.
Following God doesn’t always look like having a 5-year plan. Sometimes, it’s more like throwing your faith into the back of the truck and saying, “Alright, Lord. Lead the way.”
Reminiscing on those trips this morning reminds me that peace doesn’t come from having control. Peace comes from knowing Who’s in control. And joy? It often waits for us just beyond the edge of certainty.
So today, if life feels uncertain or you’re waiting for every detail to be clear before you take a step forward, let me encourage you: don’t be afraid of the unknown. God meets us there. He writes stories in the spontaneity. He strengthens our faith in the detours. He’s not just in the destination, no. God is in the journey.
Let your heart stay open to adventure. You never know what beautiful memories are waiting when you trust God enough to just go.
P.S. Jeff, get ready! It’s time for a three-day adventure without a plan. Although, I’m rethinking the sleeping in the back of the truck idea.🥰
