Unexpected Interruptions

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” – Proverbs 19:21

While Jeff and I were at the Jeremy Camp concert Thursday night, enjoying a time of worship and encouragement, during the intermission, Jeff’s phone rang. It was the city police department. They asked him to step outside because our truck had “been involved in an accident.”

We had parked it about two hours earlier, in an angled spot on the street next to the venue. So it seemed this would be a minor inconvenience. When Jeff got outside, he was met with flashing lights—ambulance, fire truck, police—the works. A much smaller SUV had collided with our Ford F150 with enough force to push it up over the curb, across the sidewalk, and into the front of a brick building. Both the front and back of the truck were damaged.

The young driver, accompanied by her parents, stood nearby, sobbing. She was shaken and clearly overwhelmed. Jeff gently assured her it was okay, that the truck could be fixed, and most importantly, no one was hurt. He meant it. The damage was only to metal, repairable. Life and health had been spared.

This interruption to our night reminded us that life doesn’t follow our agendas. One minute, we were enjoying music and praise. The next, standing in the aftermath of a sudden accident. But Jeff’s calm, compassionate response showed me something powerful. This wasn’t a disaster. It was simply an interruption.

Sometimes, God uses interruptions to show us what truly matters. In the face of flashing lights and dented metal, the grace of God stood clear…protecting lives, softening hearts, and shifting perspectives.

Interruptions will come. But how we respond can turn a moment of chaos into a testimony of peace.

Interruptions are often seen as nuisances and disruptions to our carefully planned schedules, goals, or routines. Whether it’s an unexpected job change, a health crisis, or simply a frustrating delay in traffic, these moments can feel like setbacks. But what if interruptions are actually divine invitations?

Throughout Scripture, God used interruptions to shift the course of people’s lives. Moses was tending sheep when a burning bush interrupted his day and changed his destiny. Mary was planning a quiet life when the angel Gabriel brought an unexpected announcement. Paul was on the road to Damascus, intent on persecuting Christians, when a blinding light interrupted his mission and redefined his entire purpose.

God often steps into our plans, not to frustrate us, but to fulfill a greater purpose. What feels like an inconvenience may be an instrument of transformation. Interruptions force us to slow down, listen, and consider perspectives we might otherwise miss. They reveal our dependence on God and invite us into deeper trust.

Instead of resisting interruptions, what if we paused and asked, “God, what are You doing in this moment?” That shift in perspective turns frustration into faith.

Has there been a recent interruption in your life that challenged your sense of control or comfort? Could God be using it to lead you in a new direction or deepen your trust? How can you respond to future interruptions with faith instead of frustration?
