Give Me Jesus

Jeff and I saw Christian artist Jeremy Camp last night. We’ve seen him several times before, but usually in a much larger arena. In a smaller local theater, from the 8th row, the worship experience was different. When he got behind the piano and sang, “Give Me Jesus,” I was sobbing as the lyrics washed over me. It was a holy moment I won’t soon forget.

We live in a world that constantly demands our attention. Notifications buzz, schedules fill up, and the tyranny of the urgent can quickly take over our day. Yet Colossians 3:2 offers a gentle but firm reminder, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

This verse doesn’t mean we should ignore our responsibilities, but rather that we should keep an eternal perspective in the midst of them. The difference between what is urgent and what is important can be subtle but critical. Urgency screams for our immediate response. Importance quietly waits for our faithful attention.

Jeremy Camp’s song “Give Me Jesus” echoes this truth. He sings:

“In the morning when I rise… Give me Jesus.
When I am alone… Give me Jesus.
You can have all this world, just give me Jesus.”

These lyrics draw us back to a simple, powerful focus. In the midst of chaos, when the world clamors for our time and energy, we’re invited to lift our eyes to Jesus.

What would it look like to pause, even for 30 seconds, in the middle of your busy day to re-center your thoughts on Christ? What if we were to whisper, “Give me Jesus,” in the middle of an email, a traffic jam, or a tough conversation?

Each moment becomes sacred when we align our hearts with His. It may not make your day easier, but it will make your day more meaningful.
