As I prepare to step away from hospice and return my focus to church ministry, there’s excitement for what God is calling me into, but also a deep sense of gratitude and a little sadness as I prepare to leave behind colleagues and friendships I’ve formed over the past 15 months.
Paul’s words at the beginning of his letter to the Philippians remind me that even when our paths separate, the bond we build with some of the people we meet doesn’t just dissolve. Paul wrote, “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.”
Paul was separated from the Philippians by miles and circumstances, yet he carried them with him in prayer and in gratitude. He remembered their partnership, their encouragement, and their shared faith.
In the same way, I believe God calls us to stay connected, to carry people in our hearts, to remember them with joy, and to pray for them. Our friendships don’t have to end because our roles change.
As I step into a new chapter, I want to hold onto some of the relationships I’ve built here. I’ll keep praying for the people who have meant so much to me. Just like Paul, I’ll remember this place as part of the journey God used to prepare me for what’s next.
This past year at hospice was one of the most challenging and beautiful seasons of my life. Walking alongside those at the end of their earthly journey taught me more than I ever expected about grace, compassion, the fragility of life, and the depth of God’s presence even in sorrow.
In each conversation, quiet moment, and final goodbye, I felt God shaping my heart. He softened me, strengthened me, and taught me to listen, not just with my ears, but with my spirit. Sometimes, the most important ministry is holding a hand, offering a smile, or simply being present.
Through this year, God was not only using me to serve others. He was preparing me. I can see now how He was deepening my understanding of His love and building within me the character and compassion needed for greater ministry in my community.
What could have been viewed as a job, God transformed into a classroom, and I’m forever grateful. As I step back into other areas of ministry, I carry with me the lessons of presence, peace, and purpose, knowing God wastes nothing and uses every season to equip us for His work.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28
